White Rice or Black Soul – Which is best for your dog ?

After a dog show free W/E I decided to use my bank holiday Monday relaxing and surfing the net.

The following is one of the many headlines that caught my attention.

“Eating white rice may be linked to a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes”, according to a Harvard University study. The full article can be found on the RTE news web site.

I’m not sure about you, but growing up, the only case of diabetes I ever heard of was a boy in my school that used to get out of choir practice, as he had to go and eat a snack at 11 Am to keep his blood sugars correct. (My way of getting out of it was just to fake fainting…worked every time.)

I certainly never heard of it in a dog, but yet this disease is on the increase in our canine companions all the time, and as readers of this blog will know, Doris our eldest Dachshund was diagnosed with Diabetes about a year ago

As per the link above, we have switched Doris, and the rest of our dogs to a Raw Food Diet, which is grain free, and rice being a grain, it’s rice free.

However, if you look at the majority of commercial dog foods, you can bet your bottom dollar that rice will figure quite predominantly as one of the major ingredients contained.

Now the study that produced the headline above states that they can’t put forward a 100% confirmed case, as they weren’t aware of the full details about what the volunteers ate in addition to rice, but one thing us dog lovers know for sure is that the increase in diabetes in dogs is happening BIG time, and the only thing that can be accountable for the same is the diet we feed them.

To answer my question , which is best for your dog – White Rice or Black Soul, well James Brown the originator of funk music, and “The Godfather of Soul” was a diabetic, and even though I somehow doubt that when he sang “I Feel Good – I Got You”, he was singing about a dog, that’s the way we should all feel about our dogs, and the very least we can do is feed them a diet that is less likely to cause diabetes, or any other preventable disease.

(….James Brown, what a legend – maybe I should have stuck with the choir practice…)
