First Meeting of Miniature Schnauzers and their owners in Ireland is scheduled to take place in Dog Training Ireland at 12.00 on Sunday-October the 30th! All Miniature schnauzers/ Mini Schnauzer Crosses welcome. Dog Training Ireland has a fully enclosed outdoor area as well as an indoor play area where the dogs can have a run around and get to know each other while their owners have a cup of tea and a chat. When asked by Joe public what is the best way to go about buying a pedigree dog in Ireland, we would always say speak to the Irish Kennel Club,breed club and then breeder. I can't understand then, when asked, why breed clubs would not take us up on an offer of a free link to the club website under Breed Clubs which can be found on the right hand side of our blog. The more of a presence you have on the internet the better chance you have of being picked up. Maybe it's a case that most breed clubs don't have a club website ? As per my recent blog about the Westminster show, we are living in a modern age, and dogs and everything associated with dogs, should have some presence on the web - it's where the majority of people search for anything these days Basic web site packages can be sourced extremely cheap, check out Irish Canine Press and Show Dogs Ireland website for details of same. Could I be harbouring a ” Terrierist ” ??

I came across the following statement in one of the dog papers the other day, and must say I was taken aback by it. "The Secretary of the AKC has issued a stark warning to exhibitors over the pond, give better entries to shows or lose them. In an echo of the UK show scene, Jim Crowley has said that with conformation dog show entries declining across all club types, the AKC has begun a study to determine if the increase in the number of shows has been a cause of, or factor, in declining entries." We are in the midst of an economic crisis, and with many people facing home evictions, after losing their employment, and us dog show enthusiasts (well not in Ireland - yet) are being told to enter more shows or they will be lost. Yaris v Ferrari ?

People often ask me why certain breeds of dogs advertised on pedigreedogs.ie are offered at €250 and the same breed bred by somebody else ,then offered for sale at €500 I always say you have to compare apples with apples. A lot of time,effort and expense goes into producing a strong and healthy litter. One of the most popular breeds in Ireland is the Labrador, and you will see them offered price wise at both ends of the scale. Whilst promoting our site at last years Pet Expo in the RDS I was asked this on quite a few occasions. Some of it has to do with what you require the dog for in the first place. Now if you want it for it's original function then the amount of field trial winners in it's pedigree will be of concern to you, and as the saying goes you get what you pay for. Dog found in Deep Freeze

Some of my recent blogs have been based on the message we are trying to promote, i.e responsible dog ownership, and trying to educate the potential dog owner, into researching the breed, and breeder before making a life long commitment to owning a dog. Recently I blogged about are we fighting a losing battle and are we a country of animal lovers, but when you read page 32 of yesterday's Cork Independent, it's easy at times to think we might be. The ISPCA were called into a facility where a "young terrier dog was being kept in a disused deep freezer with a block of wood used to allow air ventilation and the tiniest amount of light through" "It was made know to the ISPCA that the puppies bred on these premises were being sold at a country market" Who in their right mind would buy a dog at a market ? In the UK pet stores that sell pups are constantly being harassed by the majority of the dog owning public to stop this practice, and the one or two pet stores in Ireland …

Smelly Dogs A lot of owners complain that their dog smells. Dogs do have a natural odor -- in fact, each dog has a distinctive odor, which is how they distinguish one another. Many owners try to mask the normal 'doggy smell' because they, or someone in the household, does not find it very appealing. But sometimes a dog gives off a particularly unpleasant odor, which can have a number of causes. On the least offensive end of the scale, your dog may give off the typical 'wet dog' smell when it comes in from the rain (and that is quite often in Ireland). On the other end of the scale are the odors that come from rolling in dead things or droppings from other species of animals. Suggestions please….

As per my blog on the 29-01-11, pedigreedogs.ie has just passed it's first birthday. Hurraaaggghhh !! We are in the middle of a site upgrade, and I am now turning to you, our trusted readers, to submit any suggestions, or recommendations that you would like included on the new version. Be quick though, as the crack team of James & Jon (otherwise known as Jamjo Design) are ploughing away with the improvements that I have already submitted. One suggestion that came in recently and we are working with, is for ad's that come in from a breeder that has done the required breed specific health tests on the dogs / parents, would receive an accredited award of some sort on their ad, that would differentiate them from the breeders that haven't done same. C'mon get your thinking caps on, your dogs will thank you for it in the long run!

Clever Dog

Maybe some of our political party leaders, and hopeful candidates in the upcoming general election could take a leaf out of our dogs manifesto "There is nothing a dog would expect members of his pack to do that he hasn’t done himself. He is the leader because the pack trusts him" They might also consider reading Clever Dog by Ryan O’Meara, which might give them some insight into how to become a real pack leader, and the life lessons we can learn from Dogs We all know due to the enormous turn outs in the houses of the Oireachtas regarding the Dog Breeding Establishment Bill (More people attended than at the NAMA debates) that our public representatives, have dog welfare issues at heart, so maybe they can stop and take a real close look at our four legged friends, and adopt some of their leadership skills into running our country.

Seeing that my last few blogs, may have been on the heavy side, here is something to lighten the mood...Another one of my infamous dog jokes... Two Irish nuns have just arrived in the USA by boat and one says to the other, "I hear that the people of this country actually eat dogs." "Odd," her companion replies, "but if we shall live in America , we might as well do as the Americans do." Nodding emphatically, the mother superior points to a hot dog vendor and they both walk towards the cart. "Two dogs, please," says one. Dog offered at Stud

Contained in the advice on purchasing which is on every page of www.pedigreedogs.ie the following can be found "In relation to Pups on the site (or Dogs being offered at Stud) we would recommend asking the owner if the pups parents (or Stud Dog) has had the relevant breed specific health checks, and request to see proof of same" Is it due to the economic downturn, that every second ad on the dog section of the general classified sites these days is a dog offered for stud. Maybe it's the owners last ditch attempt to raise some funds in order to keep the dog, with the last step being advertised for sale for a genuine reason. Any suggestions regarding educating the general public that all dogs should have the relevant breed specific health checks, before mating, would be most welcome.

I am in the midst of reading all the Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels. These were written over 110 years ago, and the fact that they are re published every year speaks for itself. In the case of "The Creeping Man" the following passage can be found..... "A Dog reflects the family life. Whoever saw a frisky dog in a gloomy family,or a sad dog in a happy one? All these years ago Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have hit dog training / behavior on the head.....If he was around today, would he have been "The Dog Whisperer !!!" Mystery illness has struck the Queen’s Sandringham estate.

Six dogs died and more than 30 were left fighting for life with a mystery illness that has struck the Queen’s Sandringham estate. The Queen asked the Animal Health Trust (AHT) to carry out an investigation into the vomiting bug after the Royal estate received complaints of pets being struck down after walking there. Results reveal that 37 dogs were taken ill after walks on the estate. Three died and another three were put down as they were in such pain. The pets suffered symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy during the late summer and early autumn. Since then notices have been put up advising people not to walk their dogs. The Queen takes her corgis to the estate when she stays there for Christmas – although Buckingham Palace refused to discuss whether she has been walking them or taking any additional precautions. If you ABSOLUTELY have to have a "Malty-Poo" (eek ...what a name ) please think again. By creating demand for just another pseudo-breed, some experimental breeders' newest fashion, you'll just help along the creation of another fad. Not necessarily one that will lead to the general betterment of dogs and their health. Way too many ****ed up Labradoodles, Schnoodels and other -oodles out there already. Most of them created by people who think breeding dogs is as easy as mixing paint ...a bit of this and a bit of that equals ...well ...not always what you expected. The whole lot bred from dogs without health screening, hip scores, check for hereditary diseases ...and you're heading for disaster. Stay well clear. And pleeeease don't give these amateurs playing GOD any money for their "creations" either ...it'll just create more greedy amateurs jumping on the -oodles wagon.

Portadown Canine Club All Breed Championship Show.

Portadown Canine Club established in 1943,is one of Ireland longest established Canine Clubs and yesterday it hosted its 6th All Breed Championship Show at Kings Hall Complex, Balmoral, Belfast. Although the judging was done indoors in the Nugent and Alexander halls, unfortunately though not adjacent so for people with different breeds it could have involved the running to and from each hall so as not to miss classes. Car-parking is excellent at Balmoral and with so much out door space available and with yesterday's near summer weather a lot of exhibitors were able to enjoy walking their dogs outside, so giving everyone a nice relaxed day. By mid-after noon all the groups were completed so very well known secretary of Kilkenny Canine Club and owner with her daughter Anita of the Lorient Shit Tzus and Siberian Huskies. Our heartiest congratulations to the intrepid traveller Lynda Dunne, who really swept the boards at the Sighthound Specialty Show and the European Show in Slovenia this week-end. At the Sighthound Show her beautiful young Saluki, Ulmarra Cuib Ogheir, won Best Puppy in Show and the next day at the European Show Rocky's sister, Ulmarra Isnaslice, won Best puppy in Show day 3. Congratulations also to Lynda's travelling companion, Emer Mooney, whose Currabell whippets notched some nice wins at both shows too.
