Buying a dog for Christmas ?

Is Christmas a good time to Introduce a Puppy to your House ? I was asked recently to give an opinion on whether Christmas is a good or bad time to introduce a dog to the family. It's a question that raises it's head about this time every year. Rather than just give my own views on the matter, I asked followers of the pedigree dogs Facebook page to give their views on it. Dog Lovers In Ireland – Is it a Fairy Tale ?

I was given a present of a book over 15 years ago, but only at the week end did I pick it up to read.It's called Irish Fairy Tales by James Stephens who was born in Dublin in 1880 The first story that I opened up was called The Birth Of Bran. This story is about Fionn ( A descendant of Noah after the great Flood) who unlike Fergus Fionnliath, was a great dog lover, and Bran was a special dog to Fionn It says that he knew everything about dogs from the setting of the first little white tooth to the rocking of the last long yellow one. He understood all things to do with dogs because he loved dogs, for it is by love alone that we understand anything. Then it goes on to say among the three hundred dogs that he owned, there were two to whom he gave an especial tenderness. I went to my first fair in years the other day. Geared up for a day of fun, buy a few things from the stalls, I thought I was in for a wonderful day. Instead I spent the night following it in tears, and astonished by my own naivety. Why? because I saw a lot of pet animals, mostly dogs being sold, and I didn't have the knowledge of what to do about it. Various people I spoke with had told me things that varied from "its not illegal", to "its okay because the fair is a private event, and they are selling the dogs at that". What first attracted my attention was the sound of a dog crying, given the noise and bustle of the fair being set up, he was still easy to hear. I followed the noise, and came across a little Jack Russell in a chicken crate, above a crate of chickens. The little one wasn't able to stand up fully, there was no bedding or water in the crate, but there was some covering over it to give shelter from the rain. I have just finished reading this thoroughly entertaining, sometimes sad, book by Bruce Goldstein It's a real life story of how Bruce, a whiz in the advertising world, living on the Island of Manhattan, managed to work through life with bipolar manic depression, not to mention Crohn's disease. From an emotional break up, visits from Satan, to Psychologist, then Psychiatrist, onto Lithium and then Ozzy! Ozzy (Originally named Christopher - The Special one) now named after the Black Sabbath front man, was a 6 and a half week old Black Labrador Retriever that turned Bruce's life up side down - "He was more than a dog". "He was a messenger from God".
