I will never forget the first time I saw Hooch. He was just 8 weeks old and he oozed confidence. We had seen an advertisement in our local paper for Dogue de Bordeaux and with curiosity getting the better of us we just had to go and see this litter. We were fascinated by them and once I had met Hooch and his siblings that was it, I was hooked and it would start a passion which has spanned nearly a decade for me with this wonderful breed. Now I am the proud owner of six Dogue de Bordeaux, 4 of which are my own breeding. I was granted the prefix “Dar Og” about 7 years ago and was also a breeder of Bullmastiff and Japanese Spitz although now my main focus is the Dogue de Bordeaux. I am a huge lover of Isabella and it is a colour which will always be in my lines but sadly this colour is being lost in preference for darker dogs on this side of the world. Dog Kills Bill (Buffalo that is )

According to the San Francisco Chronicle (You see there are no limits as to where we @ pedigreedogs.ie will search to bring you relevant dog related stories) - a bison calf in San Francisco’s bison paddock in Golden Gate Park died hours after being chased by a toy-breed dog that apparently burrowed under the fencing. The owner of the offending dog was cited for animal disturbance and failure to use a leash in a designated on-leash area. Following on from my blog on Tuesday "Dog Owners, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly", I made a slight error in detailing the amount for an on the spot fine for dog fouling and then not picking it up in the town I live in. As per the notice here it is in fact € 150.00 Back in December last year I was contacted by a Dublin radio station Spin 103, as their lunchtime listener discussion was all about dog owners that don't scoop the poop. (I'm sure it put quite a few people off their ham sandwiches that day) They had picked up on a blog I penned a few days previous titled Poop Scoop Detective I remember at the time, the host of the show asked me what type of signage was around my town, and I described the same to him, but now that I actually look at it a bit more closely, I should have advised that the dog depicted is actually quite proud of her achievement. Are we feeding our dogs to death ?

Doing some research recently re diets for dogs with diabetes I came across the following statement "It has been my observation that the prescription diets for diabetic animals, sold by vets , are generally very low protein, which means they are very high in carbohydrates, or carb based food. Research shows us now that carbohydrates, especially poor quality carbs are the last thing you want in a diabetic diet, due to the glycemic index, or the way the body utilizes carbohydrates. Plus a lower protein diet means loss of muscle mass, and the largest muscle in the body is the heart" The author also went on to say that in her experience "Vets have little or no training in nutrition " This sounds quiet absurd, as the saying goes, "you are what you eat" , so therefore our dogs are what they eat. This breed is not for everybody……

Events such as the Pet Expo offer us ethical breeders and dog enthusiasts a great opportunity to educate the public about our breeds. However it doesn’t stop there. It also allows us to hear from them. One aspect that becomes apparent when talking to the public is how much misinformation is spread by irresponsible dog breeders, and the extent of the irresponsible and unethical behaviour that exists among some people producing puppies on a regular basis. It seems that all too often the average dog lover is being hoodwinked by the hard sell; the pros are being bolstered but the cons hidden. We all adore our own particular breeds, and when given the chance to talk about them most of us can rabbit on for an eternity. However, when someone enquires it is our duty to be truthful. No breed is suitable for everyone. All have very specific traits and characteristics. That’s why we love the ones that make the perfect fit with us. This perfect fit makes for very happy people…
