Not a great way to start a wet and windy Monday morning, but there is no point in burying our heads in the sand..
This article shot across my radar last week, and although it is mild in comparison to a lot of the cases where dogs are shipped from Ireland to pet shops etc in the UK, it still highlights our reputation in Ireland as the puppy farming capital of Europe.
Think about it…Why would a Pet Shop or Pet Store in the UK have to import dogs from Ireland, if they were readily available from local kennels ?
Is it any wonder we are in the current political / economic mess, when we can’t even get to grips with the puppy farming outrage, that we come across week in week out.
A woman who imported puppies from Ireland for sale has been banned from trading for three years after failing to properly vaccinate the dogs, by Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court
She knew she would be prosecuted, because when her pet shop licence, which allowed her to buy and sell the dogs, was renewed in January 2010, the council had introduced stricter controls
Her sentence also took into account a string of offences. These included the over-breeding of a Pomeranian bitch and accepting animals which were not properly vaccinated into the kennels.
She is not a fit and proper person to hold a pet shop licence.
The prosecutor said “This will prevent puppies intensively farmed in southern Ireland, which are susceptible to disease and suffering, being sold to unsuspecting customers.”
