Name of Kennel / Prefix / Affix: Kachru
What age were you and how did you become involved in the world of dogs ?
I can’t remember a time growing up that we did not have a dog at home but I got my first own Pedigree dog at 10 years old, a Yorkshire Terrier named Tina. I took her to local shows and as the saying goes, “I got bitten by the bug”
What Breeds of Dogs have you had over the years ?
Yorkshire terrier, Rottweiler’s, Mastiffs , Dogue De Bordeaux , Miniature Pinchers, Doberman, Akita Inu, Parsons Russell Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, Pomeranian and Lurchers.
What Breeds of Dogs have you got now ?
Parson Russell Terriers, Doberman, Miniature Bull Terrier, Miniature Pinchers and a lurcher .
What would you consider to be your main Breed and the one people associate you with?
Parson Russell Terrier
What attracted you to this breed ?
I wanted a active small dog that would fit well in to my family life and also get on with my other dogs and the kids. I felt after a lot research that the Parson ticked all the boxes for me and also they had very few health problems.
What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of this breed ?
Parson:
Parsons are quiet an active breed and love nothing better than a good walk both on and off a lead, any new owner would need to be prepared to keep this up.
Parents of the pup should be health tested.
If the puppy is broken or rough coated any new owners will need to learn to hand strip or get in contact with a good groomer.
Parsons are climbers and diggers so a well fenced garden a must.
Parsons need and thrive on company so not suitable for some who works all day, when bored they can get very destructive.
Early solicitation a must especially with small animals, they are hunters and will prey on small animals if not introduced properly at a young age.
Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming ?
In relation to exercise a good walk twice a day is a must, this needs to be on and off a lead.
Parsons need to be hand stripped as they don’t shed ( except the smooth’s) and the hair dies and needs to be taken out, either by hand stripping or a stripping knife.
Does the Breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or bitch is used at stud or bred from ?
Yes : Primary Lens Luxation , late onset Ataxia and spinocerebellar Ataxia. These three test can be got from the Animal Health Trust.
How would you sum up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited too ?
Parsons are active high energy dogs that love nothing better than a busy family life, they are great around children and other animals if socialised properly. They need to be part of the family and whether it be a walk in the woods or to lie next to you at night. They are very adaptable to change so town life fine as long as they exercised and get one on one attention from their family.
Tara & the Kachru Parson Russell Terriers will be on hand both days at the Dog Breed Village at this years Pet Expo. This is a great chance to get up close & personal with this breed of dog that is gaining in popularity all the time
