Miniature Pinscher

We are Cherrybeau Kennels a small miniature pinscher kennels situated in Wexford in the sunny south east. My name is Michele Browne and along with my Fiancé Eddie Brophy, we are privileged to be the owners of these wonderful dogs called Miniature Pinschers.

I grew up on a dairy farm and my first memory is of my mums best friend coming to visit with a small box, which was given to me and inside was this beautiful red and white Jack Russell Terrier pup, we called her Giddy and for the next 10 years or so she was my constant companion. We bred from her a couple of times and had her line with us for up to twenty years, she was my first pet and I will never forget her.  Along with the JRT’s we always had working collies, that were always trained by ourselves and there was usually a red setter or pointer lurking around the farm as well.

When I met Eddie, I was in a rare stage of my life where I actually didn’t have a dog, I was living by myself and working full time, it wasn’t the right time. However Eddie was also a dog lover and we decided to get a dog together. The search began for our breed and after a lot of research we both decided on the Miniature Pinscher, they fit exactly the type of dog we wanted.  They are small, they are short haired and most importantly they are a healthy tough sturdy little dog, with no genetic hereditary health issues.   It took us six months to find a min pin. We picked Milly up when she was eight weeks old and were instantly smitten.  Not long afterwards we decided that we wanted another one to keep her company.  Through a friend I was introduced to the Tangetoppen kennel in Norway, who at this time had just made a male dog up to champion in Norway and they wanted to find him a new home, we jumped at the chance to own this special dog and Turbo came to live with us, he was already a Norwegian Champion, where the breed are very popular and enjoy large breed entries for showing.   We started off showing Turbo and very quickly he also became Irish Champion, which was a great day for us.   But it didn’t stop there with the little guy, he has brought us to the World Dog Show in Paris in 2011, he has brought us to Crufts and without doubt the highlight in August 2011 he became the first and only Miniature Pinscher to win FCI Group 2 in Ireland.   What a joy it has been travelling exhibiting and meeting new people who all share the same interest and that is perhaps the best thing about the showing world, it is the friends that you make.

As these dogs are relatively few in number in Ireland, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the breed in General.  They are a small dog with a height range of 26cm to 30cm. They should weigh between 4 and 6 kg.  They originated in Germany and they lived on peasant farms and were used to control the vermin population.  They are therefore tenacious, outgoing, sometimes a little temperamental, full of life, devoted and highly intelligent.  They will shower their owner with love and affection, but also maintain a certain independence.  They are active and enjoy lovely long walks and a quick rub down with a damp towel when they come in and they will cuddle up on the mat in front of the fire for the evening or up on the back of the couch.

Despite appearances the min pin is not related to the Dobermann.  In fact they are a much older breed dating back to the 1700’s.

All of our dogs live with us in the house; they travel most places with us and are full and active members of our family.   We are so glad that we made this breed our breed of choice and the longer we have them, the more we learn about them, the more we love them.   Min Pins are not for everyone, they require an owner who is firm and fair, they are not “handbag” dogs, they are “big dogs in a small body”.  We breed occasionally and sometimes offer pups for sale to the right homes, we always welcome questions and queries about the breed and we will give you a frank and honest appraisal if they are the right dog for you.  We do ask a lot of questions off prospective buyers, but we also expect to be asked a lot of questions.  They have a long life span and they are an investment of time, effort and companionship for 14 plus years, we expect our puppy buyers to have researched and given a lot of thought to this investment.
