What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of this Breed ?

Treat the dog as a family member for life

Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming ?

Minimum effort required, daily short walks. The coat should be hand stripped 4 times a year. Combed or brushed every 2 days as this keeps the coat healthy and it keeps a close bonding with your dog.

Does the Breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or bitch is used at stud or bred from ?

It is extremely important to examine the breed pedigree papers to ensure that the lines are not too close as this could cause birth defects in new pups. Check that characteristics are true to the breed, also check the head, mouth, teeth, eyes, front movement, back movement and topline. Examine the coat for colour and texture.

Finally, how would you sum up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited too ?

The Irish Terriers are family dogs who love being in the company of people. As they are such an intelligent dog they will need a strong owner to control their fun and daredevil side. Their loyalty knows no boundaries. By nature they are a guard dog and were also bred to keep rodents under control. They are quite content to be city dwellers or Country dwellers. They will always be extremely enthusiastic to see their owner return home to them. The Irish Terrier is a racy dog and will never over eat regardless of what the owner puts in front of them.
