Sighthound Strolls is an initiative set up to enable owners of pet sighthounds in Ireland to meet up for regular walks and raise awareness of their breeds.
We aim to raise awareness of the plight of particular breeds of sighthound in Ireland and to promote them all as the wonderful companions and pets they are. The ‘Sighthound’ group includes greyhounds, whippets, salukis, and Irish wolfhounds etc., as well as their breed mixes.
We hope that by giving people the chance to meet the dogs and chat to sighthound owners that we are able to dispel some of the common myths that lead so many people to believe that they don’t make suitable pets. We hold monthly walks as well as bi-monthly ‘playdates’ where the dogs get to play off lead in a secure area at Positive Dog Training in Sandyford. We have also held ‘Meet and Greets’ in Dublin where members of the public get to meet the various breeds up close and find out what they’re really like.
Since we started in April 2011 we have held regular walks in Dublin, Cork, and Galway and have future walks planned for Louth and Clare. Having a large group of sighthounds walking together attracts lots of attention and gives us a chance to get our message out as well as meet like minded people to talk ‘sighthound’ to!
As time has gone by a natural progression of what we do has led to us helping to rescue and find homes for a number of sighthounds here in Ireland.
Dogs that attend our events live in a variety of homes from those living with young children to those living with elderly families and not forgetting those living with cats and hens! There is a sighthound to fit every sort of home and many of the dogs attending Sighthound Strolls take part in a variety of activities from showing, agility, obedience training, lure coursing, biking to working as Pets as Therapy dogs.
Regardless of what sort of lives the dogs may lead, they all have in common a deep love for the sofa!
Owners of sighthounds are welcome to attend our walks and events, as is anyone interested in sighthounds, rescue centres who may have sighthounds looking for homes, or those who simply want to find out more about the dogs! We are a friendly group and are always happy to provide information or answer any queries people may have.
You can keep up to date with what we’re doing and see the dogs available for new homes by finding us on Facebook by searching ‘Sighthound Strolls’ or to be added to our mailing list just email [email protected].
