German Shepherds

What attracted you to this breed ?

I love the German Shepherds intelligence, Loyalty & Fun. Also their protective instincts.

What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of the breed ?

To make sure you buy a puppy from a home where the breed is the breeders priority. By this, I mean the breeder has both parents health tested & wants to improve the breed.

Health testing is very important. We have our German Shepherds health tested in the UK with the British Veterinary Association or in Germany with SV.

The health tests that are carried out are for Hip Dysplasia & Elbows.

Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming ?

German Shepherds enjoy exercise & play time. When they are a puppy, a new owner needs to be aware not to over exercise the puppy as their hips & bones are only settling into place.

Over exercise can cause damage to joints.

Regarding grooming, Short haired German Shepherds need less grooming than Long coat German Shepherds.

Does the breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or Bitch is used at stud or bred from ?

Health testing is very important. We have our German Shepherds health tested in the UK with the British Veterinary Association or in Germany with SV.

How would you sum up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited to ?

A German Shepherd is Loyal, Fun, Intelligent & Protective.

As a puppy they suit most homes as they grow to suit their environment.

I always say to new owners of a German Shepherd puppy, “ What you put in you get back”. By this I mean, Training, Fun & Discipline.
