What age were you and how did you become involved in the world of Dogs?:

We always had a family dog since I was a child.

What Breeds of Dogs have you had over the years?

Jack Russell’s and English Bull Terriers.

What Breeds of Dogs have you got now?

English Bull Terriers.

What would you consider to be your main breed and the one people associate you with?

English Bull Terriers.

What attracted you to this breed?

When I was a child, a neighbour had one and I loved their unique appearance. I also loved their enthusiasm for life and fun! They are ready to play games with anyone willing to give them their time.

What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of the breed?

They would have to have knowledge of the breed and ideally not be a novice dog owner. They are extremely sensitive, kind, intelligent, super with children but have a rather stubborn streak.

Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming?

They are athletic and enjoy ‘fun exercise’, for example, fetching the ball or pulling a rope. To go for a walk needs to be interesting rather than a chore. They are also not fond of the rain or getting their feet wet! Even though they have short hair, they need regular grooming and washing. We wash them in freshly cut, boiled down and strained nettles to keep their skin in pristine condition.

Does the breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or Bitch is used at stud or bred from?

Overall Health screening is very important, e.g., Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) Test to check their hearing as they could be prone to deafness. They can also suffer skin or kidney related issues. Any dog with congenital abnormalities should never sire or have a litter. However, if the bloodline is healthy and the pup is naturally reared, health issues should not arise.

How would you sum up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited to?

The English Bull Terrier needs to be part of a relationship with an individual or family. They are happiest when they are with you.
