Weather forecast not good for Dogs in Ireland
It well and truly looks like the country is preparing to brace itself on two counts.
Firstly it looks like the weather has taken a turn with temperatures heading due south, and secondly December 5th is rapidly approaching, the day we all find out just how much poorer we will all be next year when details of the Budget are released.
Something tells me that Michael Noonan, won’t be getting as many Christmas cards this year as he is used to.
Noonan being the countries Minister for finance (for the meantime anyhow) is given the task of looking after the countries finances.
The rest of us get to look after whatever little we have left after Mr Noonan decides on what we should pay in relation to keeping the government jet and ministerial cars fueled, as well as funding the health service etc, etc.
You could say that we are all Ministers of Finance.
Isn’t it a pity then that some people in Irish society when getting a puppy don’t budget on what the annual costs are of caring for the dogs every requirement.
The cost of owning a Dog
I’ve seen it written somewhere before that the family dog can run up the tidy sum of up to 20 thousand Euro over it’s lifetime !!! (multiply that by 4 and I’m suddenly looking at our 4 Dachshunds in a totally different light)
Good quality food, high quality veterinary care, grooming parlours, boarding kennels, doggie day care, housing arrangements, pet insurance, dog licenses, dog proofing your garden etc all add up, and all should be taken into consideration before you go to look at a litter of pups, and fall in love with that cute little ball of fluff, that may go on to eat you out of a house and home. These are of course on top of the purchase price !
When you have worked out what it may cost you per year to keep the dog happy & healthy just remember that that little ball of fluff that has you acting like a small child all over again, may go on to live for 15 + years….( this is when a calculator comes in handy )
So please, stop, take a breath, and do what is right for you and your family, and more importantly that pup you have fallen in love with, before half committing to becoming a dog owner, as one thing I’m sure we wont see introduced in the up coming budget is Doggie Allowance to help us with the rising costs that go hand in hand with responsible dog ownership.
