There’s no F in Dog

But there is in Fear which the dictionary describes as – to be afraid of somebody or something

I think all responsible dog owners live in a mild state of fear all the time. We want to make sure we are taking care of our dogs requirements 100 %

Are we providing sufficient exercise and socialisation, do we attend to all the dogs health requirements by choosing the best course of veterinary or alternative treatments. Are we confident with our choice of when to vaccinate, if at all, and if so when to give boosters, and then when it comes to diet, have we made the right choice and are we happy with the food WE have chosen for our canine companions.

I came across an article the other day titled – 13 Pet Foods – Ranked From Great to Disastrous…

  1. A balanced, raw, homemade diet
  2. Commercially available raw diet
  3. Cooked, balanced homemade diet.
  4. Human-grade canned food
  5. Human-grade dry food
  6. Super premium canned food
  7. Super premium dry food
  8. Veterinary-recommended canned food
  9. Veterinary-recommended dry food
  10. Grocery store brand canned food.
  11. Grocery store brand dry food.
  12. Semi-most pouched food
  13. Unbalanced, homemade diet – raw or cooked – I’m seeing an increasing number of misguided pet owners in my practice who think they’re doing the right thing by serving their pet, say, a chicken breast and some veggies and calling it a day.

Now the final one initially struck the fear of God into me, as I straight away started to doubt the decision we have made to feed all of our dogs on the BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food). When I composed myself I was convinced that even an unbalanced, homemade diet – raw or cooked ( chicken breast and some veggies) would have to be better than grocery store brand dry food, with a main ingredient of corn etc and full of artificial flavours and additives. Eventually when I finished reading the article I came to the pitch. The author was trying to sell his / her book on simple homemade food for dogs & cats.

Fear is a powerful emotion, and can be used in this negative way to scare you into making a decision you wouldn’t normally make, but stand firm, you know that as a responsible dog owner, you have researched every aspect of your dogs general care and well being, and it’s going to take a lot more than the scaremongers out there to have you shaking in your boots!
