Dog Breeding – Tighten Controls

“Given the time needed to ensure the legislation is right, it will not be possible to bring forward the final draft legislation within this government term. We will therefore continue to work in developing the final draft Regulations in preparation for early action by a new government should they wish.”

These are the words of the Minster with responsibility in The Welsh Assembly, regarding the proposed legislation to tighten controls on dog breeding, and bring to an end the practice of puppy farming.

Maybe the Welsh assembly took a leaf out of the Irish Governments book…!!!

Wales & Ireland have of course got world renowned reputations for being able to produce vast amounts of dogs available for export to unsuspecting buyers

In Ireland it certainly looks like we can get our act together, and find the funding, to welcome world dignitaries, but when it comes to animal and dog welfare, it’s like “sure leave it for the next fella to sort out, I’m off to the pub”

Does anybody know the current status of the Dog Breeders Establishment Bill in Ireland ? Or is it a case that the vast amount of time spent on drafting the bill (Tax payers money at the end of the day) have been washed down the drain like so many other political footballs ?

The last I was aware was that the bill had been passed but wasn’t signed off on by the exiting TD, and meanwhile agencies and individuals right across Ireland struggle with the surplus to requirement dog population, most of whom I am sure think they must be banging their heads against a wall

I wonder what Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama, both dog lovers, would have to say if they knew fully about our countries track record regarding the mistreatment of animals, and how our political leaders can’t or wont get to grips with the issue.
