What age were you and how did you become involved in the world of Dogs ?
Entered the dog world as a groomer in 2005. Since then have gone on to become an International Certified Master Groomer, a multi award winning groomer and have made up two Irish Champion West Highland White Terriers.
What Breeds of Dogs have you had over the years ?
My favourite breed is the West Highland White Terrier having owned them for many years but I also have a fond love for Poodles
What Breeds of Dogs have you got now ?
Right now I have a Standard Poodle, two West Highland White Terrier adult dogs and 5 West Highland puppies
What would you consider to be your main breed and the one people associate you with ?
My heart lies with the West Highland White Terrier
What attracted you to this breed ?
There is something undeniably charming about West Highland White Terriers. Their white coats with dark eyes and black noses are so attractive. Not only are they physically beautiful, they are so charming with their huge personalities. They also have a low shedding, low maintenance coat which makes them the perfect house dog companion.
What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of the breed ?
Westies are classic terriers. They are independent, spirited and full of confidence. They’re small but mighty and they know it! Be ready for a dog that thinks he’s 10 feet tall and may challenge bigger dogs just for fun. They are a head strong breed so consistent positive training and guidance from puppyhood is important. If you’re looking for a small, friendly, lively, and relatively low-maintenance dog with a strong personality and loyal heart, the West Highland White Terrier is a fantastic choice.
Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming ?
Like all dogs, excersise is important. An hour a day of walking and play is important. They have a wire coat which is generally weatherproof and won’t tangle easily. Weekly brushing at home and professional grooming is recommended every 6-8 weeks.
Does the breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or Bitch is used at stud or bred from ?
West Highland White Terriers can suffer from CMO (Craniomandibular osteopathy). I have health tested my breeding dogs and they are clear of this.
How would you sum up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited to ?
Classic characteristics; confident, intelligent, independent, affectionate and playful.
Best suited to households who enjoy engaging with their dog, families with older children as they prefer gentle handling, homes (big or small) with secure gardens, people who appreciate a dog with SASS!
