Name of Kennel / Prefix/

Chowlee’s Chows

What age were you and how did you become involved in the world of Dogs?

Well we have had dogs all my life but I actively started showing dogs in 2010

What Breeds of Dogs have you had over the years?

We have had mongrels rescues Collies Cavaliers Labradors Cocker Spaniels and American Cocker Spaniels and now Chow chows

What Breeds of Dogs have you got now?

I have a Cavalier and 2 Chow chows

What would you consider to be your main Breed and the one people associate you with?

Chow chows

What attracted you to this breed?

The teddy bear look and the scrunched up faces with theses intriguing eyes.

What advice would you offer to anybody that is interested in becoming an owner of this Breed?

Research research research is this dog for you? If it is someone that is looking for walking companion or a dog to play fetch with I’m afraid the majority will ignore I have been know to have rang home and said please collect they have had enough. They are a very clean dog and don’t like to be dirty and are very easily toilet trained. If you are looking for a dog that will love you and be loyal and great for duvet days this is the one. In my experience they are great with children and all other animals as mine are socialized with them from day one and that is a key factor in any breed. Not only should the dog be researched but also the breeders.

Does the Breed have any specific requirements by way of exercise & grooming?

Well exercise with Chows is easy they don’t mind if you have a lazy day and decide to leave it till tomorrow they won’t be hopping about. But they do like there walks especially where there is plenty of people to say how beautiful they are and take rests in between ( I am describing mine) Grooming once they have their adult coat is easy enough. A long pinned brush and a slicker is what I groom mine with every week and always checking ears and pads. Chows shed their coat twice a year and need regular brushing at this time to eliminate knots. Nails can be tricky with Chows they can be a little sensitive.

Does the Breed have any specific health tests that should be done before a Dog or bitch is used at stud or bred from?

Well hip scores ideally should be done in Chows and checking for entropion these are the two main problems that can occur in Chows.

Finally, how would you some up the characteristics of this breed and what type of household would they best be suited too?

Well I have my Lilly 4 years and she is very a adorable and yet can be quite aloof and cat like but she does like her hugs and her corners of toast in the morning, Louie is 22 months and well he is a live teddy bear he is friendly and loves people and is very much different than Lilly. Louie came to us when he was 14 months and has adjusted so well as he has gone from being in a cage in a breeders into a family and we were unsure about how he would settle but we took our time and he has adjusted really well which shows they do adjust when it is correctly done there is no shame in seeking advice from others. They have such expressions like no other dogs I know and make me laugh so much. Like all dogs if they are socialized well and owners take their time they are a great family dog.

Finally, Zowie will be representing Chow’s again this year at Pet Expo as part of the Dog Breed Village  where you will be able to get up close & personal with Lilly & Louie. This will be Lilly’s second Expo & I know for sure that some of her fans can’t wait to see her again !!
