BULL BREED ALL BREED CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW OCTOBER 25TH 2010

Yesterday we had Bull Breeds show which is the third last Championship show of the 2010. It drew a very respectable entry of just under 1500 dogs. The committee headed by Johnny and Colette Muldoon had set the show up very well, using rings both inside and outside. The weather started a bit chilly in Cloghran, but soon brightened up to a lovely Autumn day, so exhibitors were very happy to be exhibiting outside. The outside rings were mainly for the bigger breeds so gave ample space for judge to see movement. German Shepherds drew an excellent entry of 43 dogs for Breed Specialist Mrs H Gleason from the US . BOB and his 7th Green Star, so also becoming a Champion on the day, was awarded to the German bred Barak Von Hamilberg Schhi Kkli owned by Neil Lawlor and Keith Fitzpatrick . But the day was to get even better for this dog, not yet 2 years old and exceptionally well handled by Richard Stapelton, as Mrs Gleason could find nothing in Group 1 to beat him, so again he w…

Portadown Canine Club All Breed Championship Show.

Portadown Canine Club established in 1943,is one of Ireland longest established Canine Clubs and yesterday it hosted its 6th All Breed Championship Show at Kings Hall Complex, Balmoral, Belfast. Although the judging was done indoors in the Nugent and Alexander halls, unfortunately though not adjacent so for people with different breeds it could have involved the running to and from each hall so as not to miss classes. Car-parking is excellent at Balmoral and with so much out door space available and with yesterday's near summer weather a lot of exhibitors were able to enjoy walking their dogs outside, so giving everyone a nice relaxed day. By mid-after noon all the groups were completed so very well known secretary of Kilkenny Canine Club and owner with her daughter Anita of the Lorient Shit Tzus and Siberian Huskies. Our heartiest congratulations to the intrepid traveller Lynda Dunne, who really swept the boards at the Sighthound Specialty Show and the European Show in Slovenia this week-end. At the Sighthound Show her beautiful young Saluki, Ulmarra Cuib Ogheir, won Best Puppy in Show and the next day at the European Show Rocky's sister, Ulmarra Isnaslice, won Best puppy in Show day 3. Congratulations also to Lynda's travelling companion, Emer Mooney, whose Currabell whippets notched some nice wins at both shows too.

Newtownards & District Canine Club

Ards Club Entertain Chernobyl Children. Last year when the Irish Kennel club hosted the European show in Dublin, we had about 4 bus-loads of exhibitors from former Soviet Union countries and many many dogs, made the journey overland and sea to Ireland. The long journey was well worth it for many of the these visitors, as they took home Europe and Irish Championship titles on their dog as well as other major awards from the Euro show and the breed specialty shows held as well that week-end. Dog showing has become very big in these former Soviet Union countries and many their breeders are totally devoted and strive all the time to improve their breeding stock. Traveling long distances to obtain new dogs and just to exhibit seems not to be a big barrier for Russian exhibitors and at all the major European shows you can see their big buses loaded with dogs and owners. Tralee & District Canine Club Championship Show 2010

Next week is the start of the Rose of Tralee festival. Beautiful girls from all over the World will compete for the Crown “Rose of Tralee, but Yesterday in Castleisland just a few miles from Tralee there was a festival of other sorts it was the annual Tralee Dog Show. Tralee Dog Show committee has had to move the venue for the dog show over the years, many moon ago it was in a school, some rings were in the school yard while other in an adjoining sports pitch. This was followed by a moved to the Rugby Grounds just outside the town, this was a friendly place and occasionally the bar opened at night for the people staying in camper van and caravans at the top end of the field, to meet and relax and a song or two could be heard too. Clonmel & District Canine Club

Yesterdays Clonmel and District All Breed Championship proved to be a real sizzler of a day, most certainly holding the record for 2010 as the hottest show day with temperatures at about 25c all day. Most certainly a day for dogs and humans to seek shade and try to keep cool, good to see bottles of suncream being handed around amongst exhibitors, and being lashed on in all the right spots - not many folk wished to start the circuit week looking like red rooster. Many judges took consideration of the new founded Irish heatwave and in the more heavily coated breeds and only kept the exhibits in the ring the minimum of time for assessment and movement. The Clonmel lay out for the show is in complete reverse to Fermoy Show held earlier in the year in the Ferry House Complex, now a pretty regular show venue for Southern shows. Hound Association of Ireland Group Championship Show

Best in show at today's Hound Association of Ireland Ch Show at Nass Race Course under Spanish judge Mr Adolfo Martinez Noguera was Geordie & Jane Anthony's Rhodesian Ridgeback Ch Rottzridge Walk The Walk Jnr Ch CW 10. Reserve Best in Show Mary & Tony Smith's Ch Uella O'Hogan (Jnr Ch CW 08). The new venue proved a major success, and left us wondering why it had not been used for this show before now. Situated en route for the next day's Circuit show in Clonmel, it had perfect facilities for this 3 group show. The large equine parade ring provided great space for the 4 rings on an immaculate lawn surrounded by low hedging and a railing and fixed seating for onlookers. Many congratulations to the commitee of the HAI for again running an excellent show, but a first this year the show was blessed with proper summer weather, hopefully the sunshine will continue for the rest of the Munster Circuit week.

Bangor and North Down Canine Club All Breed Championship Show Saturday August 7th 2010. Bangor and North Down Canine Club Show at Balmoral, Belfast was one of this year shows blessed with near perfect weather, although yesterday morning started a bit cloudy it brightened up with some extenstive sunshine and was warm enough with no wind for man and beast to be comfortable. Again Bangor was one of the shows using indoor and outdoor rings, so a lot of running around for exhibitors having more then one breed. Indeed this year more breeds than other years were in doors , talking amongst exhibitors and many agreed they would prefer to show their dogs outside. Most dogs prefer grass under foot and so seem to show theselves off better. And easy and convenient too too with the sunshine outside and so any people already established outside in their tents. Dún Laoghaire Canine Society Monkstown 76th Annual All Breed Championship show. Yesterday the National Show Centre at Cloghran was the venue for Dún Laoghaire Canine Society “Monkstown” Annual All Breed Championship show. Weather was ideal with only a light rain shower during the late afternoon, when luckily all the outdoor judging was completed. The show was held both outdoor and in the hall, this is not always ideal for exhibitors showing breeds whose rings are outdoor and indoors as exhibitors have to be hopping around a lot so not to miss their respective classes. Many exhibitors agree too the having the layout divided takes away from the congenial atmosphere of the show. Out of doors from very early morning exhibitors had set up tents, some exhibitors arriving with so much goods and food one would think they were staying for a week's holidays rather than one day. But all this effort on exhibitors parts certainly makes shows seems a real day out to meet up with family…

Irish Kennel Club Car-boot Sale

Yesterday Sunday July 18th the Irish Kennel Club held a Car-Boot sale, proceeds in aid of the IKC at the National Show Center, Cloghran. The day was overcast with intermittent showers, but despite this and it being a new venture for the IKC there was an excellent turnout of about 12 vans and 32 or so cars selling their goods at the event. Many of the stand holders were regulars at car-boot sales while others were just having an attic clear out. And great value could most certainly be had, and nobody seem to leave the venue empty handed. Not alone was this a car-boot sale, it had a nice family day out atmosphere with background music and a delicious aroma coming from the BBQ manned by resident chef Joe Doyle. There was a amazing array of goods on sale, everything from an anchor to an needle, old and new, could be purchased. There were some really tempting home made cakes and biscuits on offer, and for the younger folk a great selection of toys, so this week's pocket …

Sligo & District All Breed Championship Show

Sligo championship show was held yesterday in the now familiar grounds of Newtown Forbes GAA Club near Longford town. This is a "country" show with its own particular character - a welcome interlude from the regular visits to Cloghran. Rings were well laid out and seemed to be of good size throughout. The weather kept us guessing between warm sun and cool cloud cover, and one heavy shower stopped proceedings for a few minutes, but generally people were able to relax & enjoy a well run show, with incidentally a for once clear Tannoy system. There were several overseas judges who had attracted some good entries. Sometime after 4 pm, Ralph Dunne was faced with his 10 Group winners for final selection of BIS. After careful examination and individual movement, the choice, a popular one going by the cheers, was Ms C Kelly's beautiful & free-moving Hungarian Vizla, RISLEY MARK THE MOMENT, handled as always by Ms Sinead Taggart. Savory treats for your dog

Candy's Favorite Cheesy Dog Biscuits 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1 1/4 cups grated cheddar cheese 100g margarine -- corn oil 1 pinch salt 1/4 cup Milk -- or as needed Grate the cheese into a bowl. Cream the cheese with the softened margarine, salt and flour. Add enough milk to bind together to form into a ball. Chill for 30 mins roll out onto a floured service and cut into shapes. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 375 for 15mins or slightly brown and firm. Bacon Bites 3 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup milk 1 egg 1/4 cup bacon grease -- or vegetable oil 4 slices cooked bacon -- crumbled 1/2 cup cold water Mix ingredients together thoroughly. Roll out on a floured surface to 1/2 - 1/4" thickness. Bake for 35 to40 mins in a pre-heated oven.

Lungworm is your dog at risk?

Unfortunately in the last few months in Ireland many Veterinary Surgeons have reported a high increase in Lungworm disease. Owners should be aware of this and make sure their dogs do not eat slugs, snails or frogs either on purpose or by accident. Also owners are warned if they do feed their dogs out of doors, do make sure to wash the dogs dishes well and remove any snail that my have got into them. All Ireland Toy Group Ch Show July10th

The All Ireland Toy Group Championship Show was held yesterday in Ferry House, Clonmel. The weather was rather unkind so the committee headed by secretary Linda Mills had to make some changes to their plans for a complete outdoor show and move indoors. The judging panel were all Irish coming from Dublin Mick & Elaine Drennan and Stephen Minogue and Antrim based Annie Cochrane all who had drawn a nice entry . The honour of judging BIS fell upon Stephen Minogue one of Irelands top handlers and very well known for his Rokemin Bulldogs & Shiba Inus and now regularly handling his sisters Siobhan's CKCS to top honours. Stephen awarded BIS to the charming and confident little Long Coated Chihuahua Ashaka French Kiss, owned by Marie Thorpe and res BIS to the St Poodle Ch Afterglow Flashing Blade for Valintine, owned by the partnership of Coughlan, Burns & Lynn. We are told to vaccinate our dogs and cats every year. This is not necessary, but it can be harmful. After years of writing to the British government and the government's licensing authority (the Veterinary Medicines Directorate), Canine Health Concern and over 100 vets/pet owners called for the withdrawal of one-year dog and cat vaccines. Annual shots are unnecessary, and they are causing harm. Who says so? (more…)

World Dog Show Denmark

Yesterday seen the start of competition re the 2010 World Dog Show in Denmark, with 19354 dogs entered, its amazing to think of so many top class dogs gathered in one place Herning which is in the north of Jutland..... www.worlddogshow2010.dk Entries for the show have come from all over Europe the US, South America and even further a field. A good number of Irish exhibitors have travelled with dogs over to the show. Some folk have already been exhibiting at other shows in Sweden last week-end and are now enjoying a few well earned relaxing days before what should be 4 very hectic and exciting days at the World show. As well as regular dog showing activities the Danish Kennel Club are putting on a host of dog related activities and performances. There will be a super display of heel- work to music in the centre ring, so really something to keep everyone entertained. Good luck to all the Irish exhibitors attending.

Swords & District Canine Society

The sun really shone down at the National Show Centre yesterday for Swords & District Canine Society All breed Championship show generously sponsored by Royal Canin. A very big compliment must be paid to the hard working committee headed by Secretary Philip Behan for having the spacious rings so well laid out and the venue looking spectacularly smart and very welcoming for the judging panel, practically all from overseas. Although this year "Swords" was not an International show it stilll attracted an entry with over 1600 dogs - a superb achievement. By 4.30 it was time to call for Best In Show. The judge for this was Mr D Smith from the UK. He had a wonderful line up of the 10 group-winning dogs. Mr Smith quickly shortlisted his favourite 4 dogs and then placed in BIS top spot, the already multi BIS-winning Border Collie, representing group 1 to-day, Sh Ch/GB Sh Ch Tonkory Move Over To Huntley AnCh'08/JCH/CW'08. Search and Rescue Dog Association (Ireland North) needs your vote this week as it goes head to head with other Lottery-funded projects from across the UK in the semi-finals of The National Lottery Awards 2010. SARDA(IN) is one of only 10 projects to make it through in the Best Voluntary/Charity Project category of The National Lottery Awards, which are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects. All the projects in the running have already received Lottery funding and the Awards celebrate how they have put that money to good use. It was very nice for exhibitors involved with breeds in Group 5 to have 2 shows yesterday. At the Munster Spitz & Primitive Breeds Ch Show BIS judge Mr C Hastings awarded the big rosette to Mr S Carroll & Mr J Newman's Pomeranian Belliver Unexpected Connection Res BIS to the Siberian Husky CH & INT CH Leorient Artic Blue Lady An Ch'09 owned by Mr J Duggan. 3rd place to the US import American Akita Ch Danti's Living Legend by Stecal Am Ch '09 AOM owned by Mr K, MissF & C Mr D Venezia, Bevis & Miele. And in 4 th place to the recendly imported from Norway Keeshound owned Mr & Mrs B Carroll's Artic Best Kept Secret. Congratulations to all the very proud and happy owners, spcecial congrats to Sean & James, with yet again another BIS winning Pomeranian.

Dog Judge fined for poor ring manner

ANDREW BRACE, one of the UK’s top all-round judges, has been warned and fined £300 over the nature of his judging of Border collies at Blackpool last year. Following the judging, many people watched the video of Mr Brace on YouTube, and many more commented on an apparent lack of interest in the exhibits. Several complaints were lodged with the Kennel Club. At its meeting in February, the General Committee considered these objections and subsequently upheld them. The Committee said it ‘was particularly disturbed by Mr brace’s cursory nature of examination of exhibits and his disinterested, detached and offhand manner towards exhibitors.’ He was found to be in breach of Regulation F9 - failing to maintain and abide by the highest standards in accordance with KC Rules and regulations and the Code of Best Practice for Judges

Parliamentary DebateTuesday 30-03-2010 Mr. David Hamilton(CBI): I thank the Chairman. My presentation is on the Canine Breeders of Ireland, CBI, and its role in the industry. With over 600 members representing an industry estimated to be worth over €300 million annually to the economy, we consider ourselves the largest organisation of our kind. At present our membership is mostly made up of commercial dog breeding establishments. We have been overwhelmed by the interest from breeders, politicians and the media and we hope to launch our website in the very near future. This is expected to boost membership significantly and to bring up many more topics about which breeders are concerned. We intend to use the CBI to promote a code of ethics which members must abide by and, through engagement with dog breeders, we will improve our industry and make it more open and acceptable to the public. Bray Dog Show, Showentryireland, Technology & The Irish Kennel Club

On yesterday's Blog we featured the up-coming Bray Dog Show. Many may have missed the fact that there now is a second Irish on-line website handling dog show entries. The name, www.showentryireland.com is very similar to the exisiting on line entry service, www.dogshowentry.ie, . Do be aware of this if you are planning to enter Bray or any other up-coming shows. So technology is most certainly changing the face of the dog show world. Everything these days seems to have a presence on the internet, and with the recent release of the Irish Kennel Club's Mission Statement, I wonder how long it will be before we have on line Dog registrations ?

Dogs and The National History Museum

The National History Museum situated beside the Dáil in Merrion Square Dublin is re-opening to-day, This museum, which is part of The National Museum of Ireland, is a zoological museum containing diverse collections of world wildlife. The Irish Room, on the ground floor, is devoted largely to Irish mammals, sea-creatures and insects. Change of Judges – Banbridge & District Show April 18th

The above show held under licence to The Irish Kennel Club (IKC) has had some changes to the appointed Judges Neither Mrs Marie Ward or Mr Antonio Di Lorenzo are able to judge at Banbridge & District Canine Club show on Sunday 18th April. Basenji, Eurasier, Japanese Shiba Inu and Japanese Spitz will be judged by Mrs Dolores Dinneen in Ring 9 following her scheduled breeds. Deerhound, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Italian Greyhound, Saluki, Sloughi, Whippet, Any Variety Group 10, Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, Hamiltonstovare, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Any Variety Group 6 and Group 6 will now be judged by Mr Rodney McDowell Rottweilers will now be judged by Mrs Catherine Rooney in Ring 10 after her scheduled breeds. Flea & Tick Treatment for Dogs…Natural

In one day, a single flea can bite your dog more than 400 times. During that same day, the flea can consume more than its body weight of your pet's blood. And before it's through, a female flea can lay hundreds of eggs on your pet, ensuring that its work will be carried on by generations to come CITRUS REPELLENT Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a pint jug. Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight. Next day you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle. Spray all over your dog remembering especially behind the ears and around the head generally (careful of eyes), around the base of the tail (once again keep away from delicate bits) and under your dog’s ‘armpits’. Aromatherapy repellent: Using 10 ml. of sweet almond oil as your base, add 10 drops of lavender and 5 drops of cedarwood. Dog Sanctuary in desperate need of a new premises Cork Dog Action Welfare Group (DAWG) is appealing to Cork's animal loving public for help after learning that they will need to find new premises for their dog sanctuary in the coming months. DAWG has rehomed over 1,200 of Cork's dogs since the organisation was set up over two and a half years ago. It is run solely by volunteers who helped rescue 663 dogs last year alone.
