Tralee & District Canine Club Championship Show 2010

| blog | August 22, 2010

Next week is the start of the Rose of Tralee festival. Beautiful girls from all over the World will compete for the Crown “Rose of Tralee, but Yesterday in Castleisland just a few miles from Tralee there was a festival of other sorts it was the annual Tralee Dog Show.

Tralee Dog Show committee has had to move the venue for the dog show over the years, many moon ago it was in a school, some rings were in the school yard while other in an adjoining sports pitch. This was followed by a  moved to the Rugby Grounds just outside the town, this was a friendly place and occasionally the bar opened at night for the people staying in camper van and caravans at the top end of the field, to meet and relax and a song or two could be heard too.

But two years ago due to weather conditions making the Rugby pitch it self rather boggy and the entrances pretty inaccessible it was wisely decided by the committee of Tralee & District  to move to the now generally accepted as a super venue the Castleisland Athletics Grounds.
This year car-parking was a lot easier with the use of a area just behind the main building, which also facilitated camper and caravan owners if they wished to stay pre and post show, which I am sure was much appreciated by everyone.

Tralee is always a show to look forward to but also twinged with a little sadness at its the last show of the “Circuit” and in some way wraps up the summer show season. Yesterday wasn’t really summer weather rather over-cast all day with a treat of rain The entry was 1745 dogs coming from Ireland the UK and even a few exhibitors had made longer journey to come to Kerry for this “Circuit” week , even if some people are not on the high they were on earlier in the week .Tralee Show always has an excellent atmosphere, and most people still trying to stay in holiday mood until the end of the day anyway.

When show manger Ned Burke with his lovely soft melodic Kerry accent called the 10 Group winners into the BIS ring for the grand finale of the day . Dubliner Mr Mick Drennan had the honour yesterday to decide from the assembled  group winners who should be Tralee BIS 2010.

It didn’t take Mr Drennan long to point the crown to the Smooth Fox Terrier already yesterday the Group 3 winner Shillelagh Smooth Operater, JCH, owned and handled by Mr R Delmar. This young home-bred dog is only 15 months old, and already this week had won 3 Green Stars and 2 BOBs so a wonderful way to wrap up Circuit week  for his proud owner Dubliner Ross.

The 2nd place crown was awarded to the Wicklow based Group 10 winner the lovely Whippet ,Ch Collooney Thats The One AilesburyJCh. Owner by MR C Matthews/ Mrs L Cuthbert-Matthews and piloted per usual by Linda.

Into 3 rd place Mr Drennan indicated to the Group 6 winner and last month BIS at the Kilkenny show, Mr E Murray’s Beagle Ch Heathergrove Persian Warrior, all the way from Navan.

And 4th place to the Multi BIS/Group winning and to-days Group 8 winning American Cocker Spaniel AmCh/IrShCh/GBCh/Int BeauteCh San Jo’s Born To Party An Ch’07/’08/’09 CW’08 proudly owner by Mrs M & Miss M Boardman, and handled by Monica .

So another Tralee show came to its conclusion, congratulations to the hard working Tralee committee for putting on a excellent show, but as everyone agrees with out Maudie and Ned Burke there would be no Tralee show so multi congrats to them too.

As the vehicles drove out the gates of the Castleisland Athletic Club, many were celebrating an amazing week, others maybe not so good, but one thing for sure the “Circuit” always has that addictive pull and next year the same familiar faces will return again.
