Dog Kills Bill (Buffalo that is )

Paul | blog | January 6, 2012

According to the San Francisco Chronicle (You see there are no limits as to where we @ pedigreedogs.ie will search to bring you relevant dog related stories) -  a bison calf in San Francisco’s bison paddock in Golden Gate Park died hours after being chased by a toy-breed dog that apparently burrowed under the fencing.

The owner of the offending dog was cited for animal disturbance and failure to use a leash in a designated on-leash area.

Back in June last year we posted the following blog dogs unleashed heaven forbid

Now Liz the main person behind the site and organisation has done sterling work in trying to abolish the draconian bye-laws that exist in her area re exercising your dog off lead. Check out the newly designed dogs unleashed Web site

I am sure Liz would agree with me in stating that she is fighting the fight for the dogs and their responsible owners, and the instance in San Francisco shows us that there are indeed many times when our dogs should be under total control.

Bear this in mind when heading out for your walk, especially as we head out of the winter and into spring when a lot of farm animals are re introduced to the land, and the lambing season kicks in.

Keep you and your dogs safe at all times, pick up your dog poop, and join with Liz and co in fighting on behalf of the responsible dog owners in Ireland

Dog ownership – The highs and lows

Paul | blog | November 1, 2011

Yesterday was a great day, that was until I got a text off a friend to say that Tilly her 18 year old Jack Russell Terrier had crossed the rainbow bridge

I blogged about Tilly in March and to me she summed up what the human canine relationship is all about

As I said the day was going great up to that point, as we were at the All Ireland Bull Breeds Association championship show held at the Irish Kennel Club’s show centre in Cloughran, Dublin

Daisy, pictured to the right of her litter brother Danno here was awarded her seventh and crowning green star, and now can go by the title Irish Champion Dessaur Driving Miss Daisy subject to IKC confirmation.

This is our second ever Irish Champion, Daisy’s father Dopplegenger Joe Daly being our first.

Thank you to everybody yesterday for the warm wishes, and I look forward to seeing you all next year, as we try and make up Danno

Dog Talk

Paul | blog | October 18, 2011

I think after the recent Pet Expo I am all talked out.

Sometimes it’s nice if some people do the talking for you, so that’s why I have posted the following comments that came in during the last week re Pedigree Dogs

“so glad you have this site because I despise the DD site”

“I currently have some pups advertised on your site and want to thank you, 3 of them found great homes from your page and I am thrilled.  I have just one little girl left now and I have updated the ad to say that.  I have them advertised on DD too but I do find that the enquiries from your webpage are from much better informed people who seem to be more conscientious about the background of their puppy, which I wholeheartedly encourage. ”

Here are some older ones that I have archieved….(Always nice to look back on)

“hi just to say how impressed i am with your site – lovely lay out with lovely healthy looking dogs and puppies for sale keep up the good work

“Keep up the good work.”

“I think the site is great.”

“Love the site! It’s about time there is a site that people dedicated to their breeds can use, and for prospective buyers to buy well bred, well reared, well socialised quality puppies.”

“its a great site, especially since it is just for registered dogs, well done and thank you”

“Best of luck with new site. Badly needed. Will promote it in our hospital.”

“Had a look at your website – I’m very impressed – it’s a good idea
and much needed, I agree – I see that you do have an excellent page of information for people who click on “Advice: purchase/ advertising”

“Just a word of congratulations! The usual advertisement media for dogs in Ireland is usually full of poorly bred dogs, mis-information and irresponsible people trying to make a quick buck from their dogs, it’s great to finally come across a website that truly supports responsile dog breeding and ownership”

“Well done and Thanks”

“Hi there i think your site is fab well done”

“It’s a good site in my opinion.”

“Hi site is cool”

” Congratulations, I think it is doing a great service”

“I would like to Congratulate you on your Site Well Done and may it be a great success .”

“Congrats on the great website.”

“again i think so far its a great site.“

Feel free to add your comments, and I’ll publish the nice ones on a blog in the future.

2 Dogs 2 “Tales”

Paul | blog | September 27, 2011

Last week was a tale of 2 different endings for 2 different dogs I came across

Last Friday I called into one of the boarding kennels that I use from time to time just to say hello. Whilst talking with the proprietor a man and woman called in. At first I thought that they were coming to collect a dog that was being boarded, but when the owner went into the kennels I found out that they were there to see if a dog that had been rescued, was the dog that went missing on them in January of this year.

Roxy, a German Shepherd / Labrador mix was a “Community” dog, and was shared between 11 households on a small estate in North Cork. Due to problems with a dog warden, it was decided to send the dog on a 2 week vacation, at least until the heat had died down, and satisfactory arrangements could be made before his return. Whilst on his holidays, the dog bolted and was only spotted a couple of times since, once at the mouth of the Jack Lynch Tunnel where he was eventually picked up.

Rona & Jim being the closet to Roxy were distraught and spent every waking moment thinking of what might have happened to him, and scoured the internet for lost dog sites in the hope that he may be handed into a rescue.

It was obvious from the moment Roxy turned the corner of the boarding kennel building that he owned these 2 people, as Rona burst into tears and Jim wasn’t far behind.

Rona had never given up on finding Roxy, and on Thursday night whilst the laptop was open, decided to have another scour of the rescue sites. She couldn’t believe it when she came across a picture of what looked like a well slimmed down version of Roxy, but she knew from his eyebrows that is was her dog. Jim tried to calm Rona down advising that it may not be him, and not to build her hopes up, but this obviously didn’t work, as when she was now waiting for the dog she had seen on the internet the night before, she was visibly shaking.

It was great to have been witness to this unbelievable reunion, and to see first hand what Roxy meant to these people, who hadn’t been real dog lovers until he came into their lives. I am sure both will give as much to each other on their continued lives together.

The other story doesn’t end as well.

Due to health reasons a man was advised to give up his three dogs, all pure bred pedigree dogs.

2 were smallish breeds, and the other was a large dog.

Homes were being sought for all three, and I myself put out the feelers, as did many more. It was thought that the 2 smaller dogs would find homes very quickly, probably more to do with the current economic crisis than anything else.

Sure enough, one of the small dogs went straight away to a fabulous home in Co. Kerry, and is currently enjoying a 2 week holiday at the beach.

A breed rescue came forward for the large breed, as they had somebody looking for an adult in this breed, that cost the owner € 1200 as a pup. Due to the distance involved, the rescue requested if they could be met halfway. The Kennel owner couldn’t make this journey due to prior appointments, so the owner of the dogs was contacted and he volunteered to make the trip.

All went well until the rendezvous, and when the hand over was taking place the dog bit the owner on the hand. This was totally out of character as during the dogs stay at the boarding Kennel whilst homes were being sought, he was a model dog, and got on with all humans and dogs alike.

2 days later the kennels got a phone call from the rescue to advise that they had the dog put to sleep, as they couldn’t re home a dog with this temperament.

Obviously the kennels and the dogs previous owner, whom had to be contacted, were extremely upset, and as a result the owner in now taking back the third of this trio, even though he is not in the right health to do so.

So there you have it, Roxy the cross bred dog, who was missing for 9 months, was reunited with his owners who never gave up hope, and were moved to tears upon their reunion, and our pedigree dog that was bought for € 1200 as a pup, put to sleep in his prime.

Dog Club Website – KC issues directive

Paul | blog | September 23, 2011

I read in one of the UK Dog papers that The Lancashire Heeler Club UK has recently received directives from The Kennel Club London.

One being concerns expressed about the club’s website, that club information is being made available on other internet sites, and now the club committee is required to ensure that its website is kept up to date as far as possible, and that official club information is only made available via the club’s website.

This follows on from a post on one of the Irish Dog papers Facebook page yesterday where the following was posted. “the Irish Kennel Club have suspended all licensed events in the north for the next 21 days. They have also asked that members and/or competitors resident in the south do not travel north for training or competition purposes for the next 21 days and vice versa”

I believe the above statement relates to Field trial events

To the best of my knowledge Facebook is the only place that this message appeared on the world wide web

Maybe we should all look at this directive and see that it’s time that all breed clubs stand up to the mark, and put ourselves out there so that anybody looking for correct and reliable information on our Pedigree Dogs can do so from the comfort of their computer.

I heard recently that some Vets right across the country are advising people NOT to get a Pedigree Dog based on the cases of bad breeding that they are being presented with day in day out.

As I mentioned on this Blog before that if we hide behind a rock, nobody will ever find us

French Bulldog Video & FCI Breed Standard

Paul | blog | September 21, 2011

Not 100% accurate, but gives a good idea of what the breed is like, and what type of home they would suit.

ORIGIN : France.

DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE ORIGINAL VALID STANDARD : 28.04.1995.

UTILIZATION : Companion, watch dog, pleasure dog.

CLASSIFICATION F.C.I. :Group 9 Companion and Toy Dogs.
Section 11 Small Molossian Dogs.
Without working trial.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : Probably issued, like all the mastiffs, from the Epirus and the Roman Empire molosses, relative of the Bulldog of Great Britain, the Alans (tribe of the Middle Age), the mastiffs and small type mastiffs of France, the bulldog we know is the product of different crossings done by enthusiastic breeders in the popular quarters of Paris in the years 1880.
During that period, the Bulldog being a dog belonging to butchers and coachmen of « les Halles » (market place), he soon knew how to conquer the high society and the artistic world by his particular appearance and character. He then rapidly propagated himself.
The first breed club was founded in 1880 in Paris. The first registration dates from 1885 and the first standard was established in 1898, year in which the « Société Centrale Canine » of France recognized the breed of the French Bulldog. The first shown dog was from 1887. The standard, modified in 1931, 1932 and 1948, was reformulated in 1986 by H.F. Reant and R. Triquet (F.C.I. publication 1987), then in 1994 by the committee of the Club of the French Bulldog with the collaboration of R. Triquet.

GENERAL APPEARANCE : Typically a small size molossian. Powerful dog for its small size, short, compact in all its proportions, smooth-coated, with a short face, a snub nose, erect ears and a naturally short tail. Must have the appearance of an active animal, intelligent, very muscular, of a compact build with a solid bone structure.

BEHAVIOUR / CHARACTER : Sociable, lively, playful, sporty, keen. Particularly affectionate towards his masters and the children.

Dachshunds,Diabetes & Doris

Paul | blog | September 20, 2011

On the following Blog I advised that Doris our oldest Standard Smooth Dachshund was diagnosed as being diabetic

We were aware of diabetes being on the increase in dogs around the world, but to be honest didn’t think we would be affected, as our pack are kept at a healthy weight and receive the required amount of exercise for the breed and the individual dogs age.

Initially, we were very worried about the diagnosis, mainly having to administer the insulin by injection every morning.

I have administered different vaccines over the years by way of syringe, but these instances were few and far between, and now I would have to be doing it every morning for the hopefully very distant future.

You can imagine my delight then, when I came across the following news that the head of biotechnology and cosmetics company Phosphagenics, Dr Ogru has joined Swiss-based Novartis Animal Health to perfect patches that will deliver an insulin gel through an animal’s skin.

The technology that has been researched for 10 years is called targeted penetration matrix (TPM)

Apart from the obvious advantage of administering the daily dose of insulin in this way compared to intravenously injected insulin, TPM allows a dose to be delivered in a constant dose over a period of time through the skin, and not only that but the patches can be used to deliver a range of drugs for pain, and for arthritis.

Now like most things, I’d imagine that this technology and these patches will take forever before they appear on the market here in Ireland, but maybe some of the pups being born right now that go on to develop diabetes, will benefit from this huge advancement in this area

Doggie (Not Dodgy) DVD’s

Paul | blog | September 6, 2011

Back on the 25th of May we published the following article about Keyhole spaying Click Here

Well on the 05th of August we availed of this service and procedure, and had Donna our 5 and a half year old Standard Smooth Dachshund spayed using this method.

To say we were delighted with the results would be an understatement.

It is a very difficult decision to make, as any procedure where anaesthetic is used, carries potential risks, but decided it was best for all concerned that we went ahead with it.

We dropped Donna off at the surgery at 1000 hrs, and she went on the operating table at 1200 hrs, and we collected here at 1430 hrs.

When we called to collect her at this time, she ran to greet us.

We brought her home, and let her out in the back garden, where my wife & I looked at each other as if to say, had she had an operation at all.

No Elizabethan collar, no stitches to pick at, and she ate her evening meal the same as any other normal day. (Authors note: Gerry From Whites Premium, just called to say that it had nothing to do with the success of the operation, and was just to do with the quality of his feed !!!)

We even got a DVD copy of the procedure, showing exactly what happened etc.

Now it’s not a DVD I could see myself sitting down to watch with a big box of popcorn, and fans of horror movies would be disappointed, as there wasn’t a speck of blood to be seen from start to finish.

The procedure is minimally invasive, less painful and has a rapid recovery, and would highly recommend it, even if you have to drive to Cork to avail of the same.

Canine Carnival – MADRA

Paul | blog | August 19, 2011

The majestic surroundings of Brigit’s Garden will provide the venue for our first Canine Carnival event. Dog-owners from far and wide are invited to the Roscahill garden for a celebration of dog ownership. The Celtic themed garden will host this MADRA fundraising event on Sunday September 11 from 1-6pm.

Throughout the day there will be entertainment for children, adults and dogs with a story-telling session in the Roundhouse, the dog detective treasure hunt in the woodland, a traditional music session with Sharon Shannon, and the holistic hound workshops encompassing canine nutrition, dog cookie-making, dog care and dog reiki in the hazel room. There will also be a puppy puppetry show, dog balloon modelling and a poetry reading.

The event will commence with a blessing of the dogs and their owners. Dog owners will also be encouraged to place a commemorative message on a wishing tree in memory of pets that have passed away. The afternoon barbecue at the marquee will be followed by a traditional session with world-famous musician and MADRA Patron Sharon Shannon.

The proceeds from the event will go towards helping MADRA to continue to rescue abandoned, neglected, abused and unwanted dogs. MADRA’s running expenses are in excess of 100,000 per annum and the funds raised from this event will help towards the rising cost of food and veterinary care.

A family ticket for 2 adults and 3 children is priced at €20. Adult admission is €6.50 and admission for children over 4 years of age is €4.50. Concessions are available and all dogs go free. Tickets can be purchased at the MADRA shop in Moycullen, Brigit’s Garden and at veterinary surgeries throughout the city and county.

Showing Dogs in Ireland – You would have to be mad !

Paul | blog | June 22, 2011

Pedigree dogs for sale in IrelandEinstein described insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results….

I’m not sure what the above says about us Dog Show people, that travel the length and breadth of this country most week ends of the year, giving up most of the major bank holidays to sit in a green field or car park, in a tent if you are lucky, if not, just on a camping chair, competing against the same people’s dogs under breed specialists, group specialist’s, all rounders, first time judges, acquaintances and sometimes friends all in the hope of coming home with a rosette !

Anyway, I’m still looking forward to Kilkenny & District Canine Club & Déise Canine Club’s back to back shows this Saturday & Sunday

Let’s hope the weather forecasters have it right, and we actually get to use our sun cream.

Pedigree Dogs Exposed – Part Deux

Paul | blog | June 21, 2011

As per my blog on the 07-06-11 the BBC have commissioned Jemima Harrison to make a follow-up film to Pedigree Dogs Exposed, Click Here

There has been a mixed reaction to this announcement from a lot of dog showing folk in the UK and Ireland, indeed the Facebook group Stop The BBC Making Another PDE has over 3700 members, and is gathering momentum

The main reason people are opposed to the making of part II, is because they consider the original Pedigree Dogs Exposed to be a one sided distorted and biased production which did not fairly represent the world of  the pedigree dog, dog breeders or the Kennel Club

On the other hand a lot of people are saying that if there is nothing to hide in the world of Pedigree Dogs, why be so protective.

In response to a lot of people saying “why don’t you come up with some solutions rather than just constant criticism” Jemima Harrison has come up with her Ten steps to help save the pedigree dog

I particularly like # 4 and have mentioned this on numerous blogs in the past

One way or another, this programme is going to be made, and I am sure that there can be some sort of compromise from both sides, to make sure that when the finished article is aired early next year, everybody involved will be ready for any of the consequences…, and let’s hope that unlike most sequels, this is going to be far better than the original

Hound Association Of Ireland

Paul | blog | June 16, 2011

Yesterday, courtesy of Our Dogs Ireland, the list of judges for the Hound Association Of Ireland, Championship Show to be held on the 13-08-11 was published.

Mrs B Hession (All Breeds – Golden Retriever Specialist) will be doing all Long Haired and Smooth Haired Dachshund varieties, check out her profile here www.dogjudges.info/bios/judgesbiosh.htm

She will also be judging the following day at Clonmel and District Canine Club Championship Show, where she is judging a lot of breeds in Group 8

This is the only single show on the Island of Ireland that you can try and qualify your Standard Smooth Dachshund for next years Crufts.

Some people have mentioned before that they think the Crufts qualifier each year should be your breeds club show, whereby it is always a breed specialist appointed on the day.

Do you think that as it is a hound show, that the very least, the judge appointed for this one roll of the dice re Crufts qualification (for a lot of hound exhibitors in Ireland) would at least come from a breed within the hound group ?

The Dog Whisperer – Top 10 Dog Barks Explained.

Paul | blog | July 31, 2010

Unless you’re the proud of owner of a Basenji (the non-barking dog breed) there is every chance that once in a while your dog lets rip with a bark or barking session and you have no idea what they’re trying to say. Well wonder no more, we explain the common reasons behind 10 different dog barks….

1. Continuous rapid barking, midrange pitch: “Call the pack! There is a potential problem! Someone is coming into our territory!” Continuous barking but a bit slower and pitched lower: “The intruder [or danger] is very close. Get ready to defend yourself!”

2. Barking in rapid strings of three or four with pauses in between, midrange pitch: “I suspect that there may be a problem or an intruder near our territory. I think that the leader of the pack should look into it.”

3. Prolonged or incessant barking, with moderate to long intervals between each utterance: “Is there anybody there? I’m lonely and need companionship.” This is most often the response to confinement or being left alone for long periods of time.

4. One or two sharp short barks, midrange pitch: “Hello there!” This is the most typical greeting sound.

5. Single sharp short bark, lower midrange pitch: “Stop that!” This is often given by a mother dog when disciplining her puppies but may also indicate annoyance in any dog, such as when disturbed from sleep or if hair is pulled during grooming and so forth.

6. Single sharp short bark, higher midrange: “What’s this?” or “Huh?” This is a startled or surprised sound. If it is repeated two or three times its meaning changes to “Come look at this!” alerting the pack to a novel event. This same type of bark, but not quite as short and sharp, is used to mean “Come here!” Many dogs will use this kind of bark at the door to indicate that they want to go out. Lowering the pitch to a relaxed midrange means “Terrific!” or some other similar expletive, such as “Oh, great!” My cairn terrier, for example, who loves to jump, will give this single bark of joy when sent over the high jump. Other dogs give this same bark when given their food dish.

7. Single yelp or very short high-pitched bark: “Ouch!” This is in response to a sudden, unexpected pain.

8. Series of yelps: “I’m hurting!” “I’m really scared” This is in response to severe fear and pain.

9. Stutter-bark, midrange pitch: If a dog’s bark were spelled “ruff,” the stutter-bark would be spelled “ar-ruff.” It means “Let’s play!” and is used to initiate playing behavior.

10. Rising bark: This is a bit hard to describe, although once you’ve heard it, it is unmistakable. It is usually a series of barks, each of which starts in the middle range but rises sharply in pitch – almost a bark-yelp, though not quite that high. It is a play bark, used during rough-and- tumble games, that shows excitement and translates as “This is fun!” .

Robin Hood dog steals limelight

Paul | blog | May 21, 2010

His Robin may not get any awards at Cannes, but the Irish wolfhound Russell Crowe bedded down with in his latest flick could be crowned top dog. Toby Rose, who for the last decade has hooked up with British film critics to pick the best screen mutt for the unofficial gong, says the tenth Palm Dog will be as fiercely contested as ever. In the festival’s opening film, Robin Hood, an Irish wolfhound curled up beside the legendary outlaw played by Crowe after Cate Blanchett’s Lady Marian sent him off to sleep in a servant’s room instead of with her. Another major contender for the award, to be handed out on Friday, two days ahead of the official Palme d’Or, is the boxer dog in Stephen Frears’ Tamara Drewe whose rural rampage sparks a bovine stampede. Last year a 3D dog from the Pixar-Disney comedy Up took the award – a diamante collar with the words Palm Dog stitched into it.
