Why do exhibitors enter dog shows?
Why do exhibitors enter dog shows? Surely the answer is for fun and enjoyment?
Why then did Fermoy Canine Club recently have to cancel their open show due to lack of entries.
Why also did so many exhibitors complain about the cost and unacceptable parking conditions at the recent Killarney & District Canine Club show
In contrast, a friend of mine who rescued an Irish Terrier from Dog Action Welfare Group (DAWG) was recently at the Ballingeary Show which is an agricultural show where there were over 240 entries for the dog show, and 35 entered in the wire haired terrier class. (Which might I add was Judged by an IKC approved Judge)
I think it cost Euro 2.00 to enter one of these classes, and Rusty who came 3rd in his class received a cheque for Euro 4.00, with the class winner getting Euro 12.00
Shows like these are happening the length and breadth of our country, and are growing in popularity
The Kennel Club in the UK are trying to go about changing the perception people have of it and instead of it being referred to as “The Kennel Club” want people to think of it as “Our Kennel Club”
What, in your opinion, do you think needs to happen in order to get new people interested in showing dogs at IKC affiliated shows, and to ensure the future of the Pedigree Dog in Ireland ?

I think your article says it all. We are in a recession & spare money to spend at kennel club shows are no longer in the budget.
I can enter 4 or 5 classes at an agricultural show compared to 1 at a kennel club show, add to that the expense of getting to the show, whereas agricultural shows are locally situated.
The people who attend agricultural shows (apart from a few) have entered because its fun, its also a social occasion where you do meet genuinely nice people & best of all you see so many different breeds of dogs as the agricultural show tend to only use 1 or 2 rings. The judging tends to be fairer as well
Agricultural shows get my vote every time. If the kennel club took a leaf out of their book they would be inundated with entries.
