I thought the programme was a step in the right direction but just didn't go near far enough. Without having read the dog breeding bill - i'm scared that it will place too much emphasis on enforcement with local authorities who have neither the skill, expertise, resources or time to make a difference. Without proper adequate funding provided from central government, any legislation introduced will only be another exercise in pushing paper.

I think the programme is unbiased and well put together. As you know Paul other publications and sites selling dogs are causing a lot of this problem by facilitating these breeders of crossbreeds, so called 'designer' dogs and others that are bred in poor conditions. I certainly hope that this programme does make a big impact and would hope that decent breeders use your own site if they need to advertise puppies.

I think your article says it all. We are in a recession & spare money to spend at kennel club shows are no longer in the budget.

I can enter 4 or 5 classes at an agricultural show compared to 1 at a kennel club show, add to that the expense of getting to the show, whereas agricultural shows are locally situated.

The people who attend agricultural shows (apart from a few) have entered because its fun, its also a social occasion where you do meet genuinely nice people & best of all you see so many different breeds of dogs as the agricultural show tend to only use 1 or 2 rings. The judging tends to be fairer as well

Agricultural shows get my vote every time. If the kennel club took a leaf out of their book they would be inundated with entries.

My dog recently sired a litter of miniature schnauzer puppies, although he usually sires litters of 5/6, for the first time there was just 2 in the litter (The bitch had 2 failed matings with another dog before mating with my male)
Unfortunately there were complications and the bitch had to be brought to UCD Vet Hospital in the middle of the night. Her Caesarian cost €850, the pups and mother were then brought to the vet again to be checked the next day.Over the course of the first 2 days of the puppies lives, vet fees added up to around €1000.
As the pups grew the owner also had to pay for the pups to be micro-chipped, wormed, vaccinated and eye tested. I get pick of the litter as siring fee (agreed on at time of mating) so although I gave the owner €200 towards costs for my pup and she sold her pup for €550, she was still very much out of pocket after 8 weeks of hard work!
I think people need to be aware that things like this can happen and take away all chance of making a profit on a litter of pups before deciding to have one for the wrong reasons.

Paul
You are right as usual! I can confirm the theory that dog owners are healtier and happier than non dog owners. Taking care of a dog is almost like taking care of a child. You must provide your dog all the comfort, food, medical care and fun you can. And this makes you more active. Healthy activity in my age is essential to keep on living well.
About November in August? don't worry you'll get August in September!!!!

I have a miniature Schnauzer stud dog. Unfortunately the miniature schnauzer breed club are not on the internet. In my personal experience they are not easily contacted/ helpful when trying to source a pup. Therefore I decided to set up a facebook site to give Irish mini schnauzer owners a place to chat to one another/ recommend breeders/ source quality puppies etc.. Since setting it up it has really taken off and I really enjoy getting to know other mini schnauzer owners and their dogs. I'm also able to see how dogs my own dog sired turn out and what they're up to.
Although some people may shy away from setting up a 'proper' website because of cost etc...facebook has no drawbacks that I can see, it is easy to monitor and it is free! It also takes just one interested owner to set the ball rolling and get breed enthusiasts in contact with one another!

Hello Bruce,

My name is Josephine (I am Paul Barry's wife from Pedigreedogs.ie) you contacted Paul a few months back on Twitter about your wonderful book. When Paul finished the book and raved about it so much I couldn't wait to read it Bruce. I just finished it recently and it was a fantastic read from start to finish. It made me laugh and cry, I can relate to what joy and pleasure a dog can bring to your life Bruce, as we are the owners of 4 standard smooth Dachshunds and we just adore them. I am so glad Bruce that Ozzy came into your life just when you needed him most, he was definitely an angel sent to help you through a difficult time in your life. You will never forget him, I hope you will get yourself another dog, Ozzy cannot be replaced but nothing beats the love and companionship of owning a dog.

Once again Bruce thank you for such a fantastic read. I have recommended the book to all my friends.

Paul
I stay tuned...always! I'm curious about Josephine's idea...
Loosing dear Dempsey affected you so much that you need to talk about it over and over and if possible help other dog lovers to live with the pain of having lost their own pets.
Everything you do about it, will be a successful mission.
God bless you for being there for us and our beloved dogs.
Thanks Paul and Josephine for being such an example!
